Hand Out

Evidently someone sold my name. Well, I hope they got a lot for it.

At least ten charity telemarketers have called in the last two weeks. I’ve been sucked up to, wheedled at, pushed and hung up on. None of it has made the slightest bit of difference; I’ve turned all of them down. These for-profit telemarketers have been hired by charities to try and raise money, but most of it goes to the telemarketing firm. …which is why they refuse donations under $10, if you can believe that!

I don’t begrudge the operators a job, really I don’t. But I believe that when a person donates to a charity, the money should go to that charity. And yes, I know charities are like large businesses with operating expenses and ad budgets, just like any corporation.

But as far as I know, none of my charities employ such means to collect funds; I donate directly to the organization, never through a third party.

My charities, just in case you’re looking for a worthy cause:

Disabled American Veterans
Soldier’s Angels
Haley House Fund
…and just recently, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. My friend Rachel is raising money for them by running a marathon. The marathon is in 16 days and she’s $422 short of her goal. Please consider helping…!

And of course I know how ironic it is that I blegged. ;)

thanks for the link.
The marathon is January 11th. My fund raising goal is December 16th.
And… I’m now $372 away from my goal! :woot:

I know what you mean. If you’re going to donate to charity, you want all (or nearly all) of it to go to the intended recipient. I just started giving to a local food bank, where I know everything I take them will get used immediately. Take it in, put it on the shelf, it goes out within a day or two.

Good luck to all the charities you mentioned. ‘Tis the season of giving, and even a slumping economy doesn’t stop most people!

The food banks are the ultimate in direct to the consumer giving; I need to participate in those more often; thanks for the reminder!

Haven’t had time to post on writersblock, but I got paid $6 today via my paid posts and I gave her $5… if I hadn’t already paid for the prisms for the boys, she would have gotten it all. I hope to post on her tonight or tomorrow. I think it is great the charities you have chosen!

Oy … I HATE being begged for money. I give money a lot … to who I decide not to who some operator tries to guilt me into. I wish charities realized how counter productive it is.

I really wish I had more money to donate this year. That’s what my dad asked for as a Christmas gift — a donation to a charity. Otherwise, he wants no gifts. Especially from me. But I still wish I could. Hopefully next year will be more successful and I will have the funds to share.

Especially for Soldiers’ Angels.

Soldier’s Angels probably gets more from me during the year than the other two, but that’s cool. YOU, Joanie, do other things for them that are worth more than money… there are other ways of giving.

Megan… you and me both!

Funny you should say this, Pam. My friend Patty told me one day that she admired all the charity work I did. I looked at her like she was crazy. Charity work? Me? When? And then she said: Soldiers’ Angels, Boobiethon, the blues society. Funny, I don’t see it as charity work. I just see it as having fun while helping out. Guess my wiring is a bit more frazzled and ratty than I thought.

That’s charity work! You just don’t realize how special you are!

Thank you. I don’t feel special. Unless you mean Special Ed special. Then totally. :zombie:
