Last, best line of defense

When it comes to the subject of self defense I’m very proactive. I see weapons everywhere, from keys to fire extinguishers. Almost anything can be used to defend yourself. And I carry this philosophy with me everywhere: when I’m driving, I constantly look for ‘outs’ so I can escape if something untoward should happen. I’ve been doing it so long it’s second nature now. Is there a median? Grassy? Wet? What about the shoulder?

Call me paranoid, but my primal nature is obviously geared for survival. My dog would alert to a problem, if she’s with me… and also defend me should it come to that. But I don’t depend on her and would rather not put her in harm’s way at all. When I think of self defense products, one thing in particular comes to mind: my personal weapon, a Sig Sauer P230.

We have other firearms, but this is mine. Hubby has one that matches it, we just fell in love with it that much. It’s never misfired, never let me down. And I hope that should it ever need to be used anywhere but the range… it never will.

It’s not my first line of defense, but it’s my last, best line of defense.

That’s interesting about you..

I have my grandfathers old gun, a little 22 caliber that I haven’t fired in years…since my kids were born it has been locked up with a gun lock and put away.

It was never meant to be anything more than a nostalgia piece and help me to learn how to use a gun should the need arise, but even the knowledge that I could handle a gun if I needed to is reassuring. That and my black belt in karate…

My grandmother used to have a gun as well. Growing up in Upper Michigan she was always around guns, probably more rifles than anything, but they had them for protection mostly against bears!

I even have the bear head from the bear that my great-grandfather killed when it attacked him.

It’s funny because I NEVER sit in a restaurant or anything with my back to the rest of the room, and if there is anyone behind me, I pivot as much as I can to have a view of the whole room.

It’s good to pay attention to those things!

Well, I think my defensive attitude comes partly from hanging around a cop for so long and being married to an ultra defensive driver. That kind of stuff rubs off. I’m not paranoid, but cautious. And, I hope, prepared.

I have a concealed weapons permit but don’t usually carry around town. And when there are children in the house they are naturally all locked up in the safe or lock boxes.

I’ve just always liked guns… grew up out in the country and threw a fit when the boys got theirs for Christmas but I got a doll. That kind of thing. ;)
